Each year in November, the Friends of the Bosque del Apache host a Sandhill Crane Festival. There is much more to this festival than “just” sandhill cranes. There are huge numbers of Snow and Ross’s Geese also paying their annual visit to the refuge. During the festival, there have been mountain lions and bobcat families spotted and photographed on the refuge. As yet, I have not had the opportunity to see these animals, but as I return each year, my hopes are high. For the past ten years, I have had the privilege of being one of the leaders in a photography workshop held in conjunction with the festival.
The Snow and Ross’s geese feed in the fields during the day, retreating to the safety of the ponds for the night.
